Family Owned and Operated

How We Started

Led by the vision of our late founder R.G. “Ronnie” Kirkpatrick, Sr., GS Materials, Inc. started in 1984 with our first location in Harnett County, North Carolina. Our first mine was developed on land with little more than Blackjack oaks and Pine trees. It has since grown to become one of the largest sand mines in North Carolina.

Our current owner and President, R. Gray Kirkpatrick, Jr., has been invested in GS Materials from his early years. He spent much of his teenage years on a loader feeding the plant after school; sometimes even through the night. His vision and investment continue to support GS Materials as one of the top suppliers of fine aggregates in the state of North Carolina.

Karen Newport, our current CEO and Vice President, began as a scale master and quality control technician in 1993 and has worked her way up through numerous positions to become our current leader. Karen’s hard work and dedication is a testament to her leadership, which continues to benefit GS Materials, our employees, and our customers.

Our Business Development Manager, John Watkins, seamlessly transitioned into his role at GS Materials after spending more than 30 years as a loyal customer of ours. His most recent ventures as owner of Capital Ready Mix and former VP of Unicon Concrete prove valuable as his first-hand experience continues to improve our operations and sales. John strives to make meaningful relationships with not only our customers, but others in our industry.

GS Materials thrives under the hard work of our employees, many of whom have been a part of our “family” for decades. We would not be the company we are without them.

We are proud to say that we are currently one of the largest suppliers of fine aggregates in the state of North Carolina. In our 40th year, we are the 53rd largest supplier in the nation. We have three active mine sites in excess of 3,000 acres, with reserves to serve our customers well into the future.

Where We're Going

GS Materials plans to continue nurturing our current relationships, while simultaneously creating new ones. With the implementation of new technologies and plant designs, we aim to provide high value through our products. Our hope is to be the top choice of fine aggregates suppliers in North Carolina in the years to come.
